Jay Duff’s Summary
The first computer I programmed was a TRS-80 in 1979 - in 2nd grade. I fell in love with the Mac in 1985, when a friend from school got a "Fat Mac" (it had a whopping 512K of RAM!)
I was a charter member of the Computer Club in high school (Mess with the best, crash like the rest!) and put together my first LAN (AppleTalk) in 9th grade (1986). We had a lab of Macs and needed a LAN to print to the LaserWriter. The next year, we added a file server - a Mac SE30 with a 20MB hard drive! Also, in 1986, a mentor and I figured out how to use a 1200 baud modem to transfer the school's directory out of a DEC PDP 11/34 to a spreadsheet program (Panorama) on the Mac.
In 1988, another mentor of mine was the Telecommunication Director for The Rest of Us (TRoU) - the Chicago Macintosh Users' Group. He needed someone to take over the duties, so he could attend to urgent family matters, and I offered to help. I was subsequently re-elected in 1989 and 1990, then I resigned to go to Pittsburgh for college. So, at 16, I was on the board of directors of a 1,000+ member organization. My duties included maintaining and improving a FIDO-net BBS. FIDO was the best way to send email all over the world before the Internet was available to the general public. We had one of the very first 33.6 kbps dual standard modems on the market, thanks to a donation from US Robotics.
