Laura Abele’s Summary

I first became aware of my ability to get other people on board with me when I was the Youth Director for a bowling center. My program started with about 40 young bowlers and grew to almost 500 in three years. This growth also included parents willing to volunteer their time to help build the program. I maintained a positive, caring, and enthusiastic attitude and I believe that is why children and parents were drawn to the program.

Eventually, as my coaching and directing skills grew, I was asked to coach Regina High School’s bowling team. Again, I realized the gift that I had to get people motivated. As I shared my knowledge of the game with the girls they began to love the game of bowling as much as I did. They came to three mandatory practices a week plus they practiced twice a week on their own. In the past five seasons my girls have won four conference titles, three All Catholic Championships, several tournaments, and Regional events.

My self-management skills were put to the test and passed during a job that I had for a church. I began as a volunteer receptionist but in a few months I was asked to come on board the staff. At the end of six months I was managing a variety of jobs plus the interruptions that come from a reception position and I handled it all very well. I actually found that the busier I was the more I liked it.

I have always enjoyed math and done well at it. But it was in my job at the bank that I realized it was a strength that I had. All banking transactions were done through a computer and at the end of the day I had to balance my cash to what the computer said I should have. For the year that I worked at this job I balanced to the penny every time.

In addition to that, I had the ability to easily help a co-worker who was out of balance. Usually, I could find the problem in a matter of minutes. Sometimes, I had to look harder but was always able to help my teammate find the error.
