July 2006 — Present (1 year 11 months)
I began as a contract developer at BFW and was promoted to a staff position within six months. I led a team in designing and implementing a set of tools (in object-oriented Perl) for generating online textbooks and quiz/assessment materials for use in an online learning management application. Our source data were in a variety of XML formats and our target format was the learning management app's proprietary XML format, which we mostly reverse-engineered. Before our work, these online course materials had been built entirely by hand; we were able to automate most of the process. I built about 20 projects myself using our build system, most of which eventually launched to paying users. I also wrote the documentation for the build system (20,000 words in wiki format), trained the rest of the development team in its use, and got the team using Subversion for our projects.
